How do I know I should take my child to a GP?

If your child has a suspected concussion, and is exhibiting any signs of concussion, you should try to see a medical practitioner for diagnosis and clearance.

How do I know when it’s serious enough to go to hospital or an Emergency Department?

If your child has lost consciousness or is exhibiting any red flag symptoms, you should call 111 or seek immediate medical care from an Emergency Department.

Question:

How long should I expect my child’s recovery from concussion to take?

Most concussions resolve on their own, within 3 weeks. However, every concussion is different and some will require specialist input to aid in recovery.

Question:

Where should I take my child if I can’t get an appointment with our GP?

If you can’t get an appointment with your regular GP we recommend seeing a different GP or another healthcare provider (such as a physiotherapist trained in concussion care) to ensure your child’s recovery is on track.

Question:

Who do I need to tell that a concussion has happened?

You should tell your child’s health practitioner, school, and any sports coaches after a concussion has happened.
